There are a number COVID-19 test types that have different characteristics. RT-PCR tests are currently considered the gold standard for detecting acute infection with SARS-CoV-2. This test checks whether a sample contains virus RNA (genetic information in certain viruses).
To identify a potential immunity against COVID-19, different antibody tests have been invented. An antibody test is suitable to reveal a current or previous immune reaction to SARS-CoV-2, but is not suitable for the early detection of an acute infection.
Recently, more and more provider offer so-called antigen tests for COVID-19, which can detect viral protein in the sample. Although this test procedure gives a result much faster than RT-PCR tests, we currently still do not recommend or offer antigen tests for the detection of an acute infection, as they are less sensitive than RT-PCR tests. A low sensitivity poses a higher risk of not detecting an infected person.
